Funded by the EC, this project, Bringing Women's rights to Sudan's Peace and Democracy Agenda works towards empowering the poor and marginalized women of the post conflict Sudan to bring women issues on to the political agenda and to bring their voices and interests together to create a strong voice for women, especially taking into consideration the opportunities perceived in Sudan's elections, the self determination referendum and popular consultation. These local women were involved in trainings and workshops on their constitutional rights, and their rights as stipulated in the African protocol and CEDAW. To create large outreach of the documents, both documents were translated into Arabic and have recently been published.

Through this project SIHA has established a strong network across Sudan, where we were able to do an assessment and to build a strong in country collation of groups working on issues of gender equity and the rights of women.

More broadly, the project also target actors in mainstream politics and civil society, marginalized people (those geographically, politically, culturally and economically marginalized, IDPs, and other disadvantaged groups) civil society and community-based organizations, youth and decision makers.

This advocacy campaign is organized and run by the women and civil society organizations in the war-affected areas to ensure that their voices are heard on the national level in both Khartoum and Juba.

Project activities include;

  • A study on the status of women in North and South Sudan, their access to social services, their role in decision making, political participation, laws that are discriminatory against women, women access to justice in addition to the implications of their lack of access to education, health care and other social facilities.

  • A campaign for the government of National Unity to sign and ratify the African Protocol on women's rights and the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against women (CEDAW)

  • Intensive awareness training and mobilizations on women's issues e.g. political participation and leadership

  • Convene conferences to debate the need to amend policies and legislation to improve women's legal conditions and implementation of the peace process and democratic transformation

  • Production of training and advocacy materials with a focus on women's issues
